Rush Melanoma Expert: Play It Safe in the Sun

There’s no season more anticipated and celebrated than summer in Chicago. The city parks and lakefront are packed with people trying to make the most of every minute of warm sunshine. Unfortunately, extended exposure to sun causes many of the wrinkles and age spots on our faces, and is the number one cause of skin cancer.

“I think it’s perfectly fine to enjoy yourself in the sun, but you need to do it responsibly,” says Howard Kaufman, MDRush University Cancer Center director and melanoma expert.

Some easy things you can do to significantly reduce your risk of damaging your skin are to stay out direct sun during peak hours (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), wear clothing to cover your skin and use sunscreen with the appropriate SPF.

Kaufman will speak on Thursday at Rush’s free community wellness event — Prevention, Treatment and Research for Melanoma — from 6 to 8 p.m. Learn more and register at www.rush.edu.
